Is the Atomstack A5 Pro 5W really a 40W laser?
No. Atomstack marketed the A5 Pro as '40W', which is electrical input; its own spec gives 5–5.5W of optical output. Compare machines on optical power only: by that measure this is an entry-level engraver, not a cutter.
What can the A5 Pro 5W cut?
Thin material only. A LightBurn forum owner reports 2 mm plywood at 250 mm/min and 100% power in one pass, and expects 3 mm to take 2–3 passes. Our profile caps basswood at 3 mm, and a 10 × 10 cm square in 3 mm basswood takes ~14–24 min in our benchmark.
The A5 Pro is discontinued: should I still buy one?
Only as a cheap used starter or remaining stock, ideally under $200. The A5 Pro is no longer a current Atomstack model, so check the module and power supply before paying. If you plan to cut 3 mm wood regularly, the 10W tier or a current 10W machine is a better first buy.
