TL;DR
The Ray7 40W is the top of Longer's new open-frame range: $669.99 on Longer's store in October 2026, $10 less than the Ray5 40W basic set. It cuts a 10 × 10 cm square in 3 mm basswood in about 4–7 min by our estimate and handles 10–15 mm basswood in one pass with air assist, at 600 mm/s on a 405 × 400 mm bed. The trade-off is the widest spot of the range, 0.10 × 0.15 mm, and an air pump sold separately.

What makes this machine stand out
Hardware and workflow features worth understanding before you buy : not just wattage on a label.
Deepest cuts of the Ray7
By our estimate, 10–15 mm basswood in one pass with air assist and a 3 mm basswood square in about 4–7 min.
Under the Ray5 40W price
$669.99 in October 2026, against $679.99 for the Ray5 40W basic set, with faster 600 mm/s motion.
Our verdict
Ideal if you
The 40W Ray7 puts serious diode cutting power on Longer's new frame: thick plywood and dark acrylic in fewer passes, 600 mm/s engraving and a 405 × 400 mm bed, for less than the Ray5 40W it succeeds in price.
Skip if you
The wide 0.10 × 0.15 mm spot is a compromise for fine engraving, and the open frame needs glasses, strong extraction and a fire-safe setup at this power. Clear acrylic and bare metal remain out of reach. The Ray7 is new, with no independent cutting tests yet.
Pros
- Cuts 10–15 mm basswood in one pass with air assist by our estimate, the deepest cuts of the Ray7 range
- Fastest of the range: about 4–7 min for a 3 mm basswood square and 8–12 min for a 10 × 10 cm photo by our estimate
- $669.99 in October 2026, slightly under the Ray5 40W basic set for a faster, stiffer frame
Cons
- Widest spot of the range at 0.10 × 0.15 mm according to Longer: not the best choice for fine photos
- Air pump is optional even on this cutting-focused version
- Smoke volume at 40W makes extraction or an enclosure close to mandatory indoors

Practical notes
Beginner notes
This profile is the 40W version of the Longer Ray7. Pick it if cutting plywood, signs and dark acrylic is the main job. Compare the other Ray7 versions with the chips above if you mostly engrave: the smaller modules have finer spots and cost much less. Budget for the air pump and a fume extractor with this one.
Pro tips
Never cut at 40W without air assist: it keeps the lens clean and the edges light. Use several fast passes rather than one slow pass on 10 mm and thicker stock to limit charring. Drop the power well below 50% for photos and small text, where the wide spot otherwise blurs detail.

Common questions
How thick can the Ray7 40W cut?
Longer does not publish one-pass figures for the open-frame Ray7; for the enclosed Ray7S, which uses the same power levels, it shows cuts of 30 mm basswood and 35 mm black acrylic without stating the number of passes. By our estimate, the Ray7 40W cuts 10–15 mm basswood in one pass with air assist.
Ray7 40W or Ray5 40W?
On Longer's store in October 2026 the Ray7 40W costs $669.99 against $679.99 for the Ray5 40W basic set. The Ray7 is faster (600 mm/s) with a slightly larger bed and Wi-Fi; the Ray5 40W has a touchscreen, 8-beam compression and independent reviews behind it.
Ray7 40W or Ray7S 40W?
The enclosed Ray7S 40W costs $849.99, $180 more, includes the air pump and adds a Class 1 cabinet and Klipper firmware, but its bed shrinks to 305 × 300 mm. Take the open Ray7 40W for larger sheets, the Ray7S if safety and smoke containment come first.
