TL;DR

Longer Ray5 40W is the 40W SKU on the Longer longer ray5 line. Longer's compact Ray5 20W diode engraver: verify you are buying the 20W SKU, not the 5W, 10W, or 40W Ray5 listings. Verify optical power on the listing: do not assume combined-watt marketing.

What makes this machine stand out

Hardware and workflow features worth understanding before you buy : not just wattage on a label.

  • Stiffer motion system

A 15 mm industrial rail and 4-roller Y axis, according to Longer, for steadier cuts at speed.

  • Cutting-first power

3 mm basswood squares in about 6–10 min in our benchmarks, with around 10 mm reachable in passes.

  • Light for its power

5.73 kg according to Longer, easy to move between a workbench and storage.

Our verdict

Ideal if you

Longer Ray5 40W targets mixed engraving and wood-cutting weeks: fewer passes on basswood and dark acrylic than weaker SKUs in the same line.

Skip if you

Wrong pick if you never engrave and only wanted the lowest price. Ultra-fine photo work can look better on an engraving-first SKU. Open-frame: safety and smoke are on you.

Pros

  • Redesigned frame with 15 mm industrial rail and 24,000 mm/min, per Longer
  • Fills at ~60–130 mm/s: a 10 × 10 cm photo in ~12–18 min
  • Longer claims thin stainless steel (0.15 mm) can be cut in one pass

Cons

  • Wide 0.10 × 0.15 mm spot: the least detailed Ray5 for small text and portraits
  • Longer's store price ($679.99 basic in October 2026) sits above our tracked range
  • Smaller 385 × 385 mm workspace than the older Ray5 frame, per Longer

Pro tips

Treat engraving and cutting as separate profiles. Push cut speeds only after test squares on your material. Compare CO₂ only when clear acrylic or all-day production enters the picture.

Common questions

Is the Ray5 40W the same machine as the other Ray5 models?

No. Longer describes a redesigned frame: 8-beam compressed diode with a 0.10 × 0.15 mm spot, 15 mm industrial rail with a 4-roller Y axis, up to 24,000 mm/min, a 385 × 385 mm workspace and 5.73 kg. Only the name and the general layout are shared with the lower-power Ray5.

What does the Ray5 40W cut?

Longer claims 20 mm basswood and 0.15 mm stainless steel in one pass. In our benchmarks a 10 × 10 cm square in 3 mm basswood takes about 6–10 min at 3–8 mm/s, and around 10 mm basswood is realistic in passes. Clear acrylic remains impossible.

Is it worth the price over the Ray5 20W?

Longer's own store listed the 40W at $679.99 (Basic), $739.99 (Pro) and $949.99 (Pro Max) in October 2026, above our $449–649 tracked range, so compare resellers. It is worth it if you cut weekly: our 3 mm benchmark drops from about 9–15 min to 6–10 min and fills run several times faster.
