Released March 2025

TL;DR

OMTech now sells its 500 × 700 mm cabinet laser with a 90W Yongli H2 glass tube, under model numbers that still end in -80: the MF2028-80 with manual focus ($2,999.99) and the AF2028-80 with motorized autofocus on a taller stand ($3,299.99). Both have a Ruida control panel, USB and Ethernet, front, rear and side pass-through doors, air assist and an exhaust fan built in. Cooling is a pump and tank in the base package; a 6 L chiller costs $500 more. It replaces our OMTech 80W profile. No independent review of the 90W version yet.

What makes this machine stand out

Hardware and workflow features worth understanding before you buy : not just wattage on a label.

  • 90W on a 500 × 700 mm bed for about $3,000

The MF2028-80 pairs a 90W glass tube with a 500 × 700 mm bed for $2,999.99 on OMTech's store in October 2026, less than OMTech's own Polar 2 desktop machines with a smaller bed and tube.

  • Four-way pass-through

Front and rear doors open an 835 × 95 mm slot and side doors a 520 × 20 mm slot, so long sheets and panels can be worked in sections.

  • Ruida controller with offline jobs

The control panel frames, pauses and runs files from a flash drive without a computer, and connects by USB or Ethernet. LightBurn supports it on Windows and macOS; the bundled RDWorks runs on Windows only.

Our verdict

Ideal if you

The 90W OMTech gives a sign shop or a growing business a 500 × 700 mm bed, real pass-through doors and enough power for 9–10 mm acrylic, for about the price of a large desktop CO₂. The Ruida controller is a known quantity: LightBurn supports it, jobs run offline from a flash drive, and spare tubes, lenses and mirrors are easy to find.

Skip if you

It is a heavy cabinet that needs a workshop, an outside vent and proper cooling: the pump and tank of the base package are a minimum, not a production setup. There is no camera, autofocus costs extra, and the glass tube is a consumable with a one-year warranty. Figures are OMTech's until independent reviews of the 90W version appear.

Pros

  • 90W tube and 500 × 700 mm bed from $2,999.99 (OMTech, Oct 2026): more power and area per dollar than desktop CO₂ machines
  • Front, rear and side pass-through doors (835 × 95 mm and 520 × 20 mm) for sheets longer than the bed
  • Ruida control panel with USB, Ethernet and offline jobs from a flash drive, supported by LightBurn

Cons

  • The base package cools the tube with a pump and tank; a 6 L chiller adds $500 and is worth it for long runs
  • No camera, and manual focus on the MF2028-80; autofocus needs the AF2028-80 at $300 more
  • 103 to 117 kg and about 1.5 m long: it needs a workshop floor, a 110 V outlet and an outside vent

Practical notes

Beginner notes

This profile covers the 90W machines OMTech sells today under the MF2028-80 and AF2028-80 names. It is a workshop machine, not a desktop one: plan floor space, a 110 V circuit, distilled water or a chiller, and a duct to the outside before it arrives. Budget for LightBurn if you work on a Mac.

Pro tips

Keep routine cuts under about 70% power: OMTech rates the tube at 7,000–8,000 hours at 10–40% but 3,000–4,000 hours at 70–100%. Check the mirror alignment after delivery and after any move, starting from the first mirror. Clean the lens and mirrors weekly in production, and keep a spare lens on the shelf.

Common questions

Why is a 90W laser called MF2028-80?

OMTech kept the old model numbers when it fitted a 90W Yongli H2 tube to the 500 × 700 mm cabinet machines, around early 2025 according to archived store pages. The MF2028-80 and AF2028-80 sold today are the 90W machines; used units listed as 80W usually have the older 80W tube.

MF2028-80 or AF2028-80: which one should I buy?

Both share the 90W tube, the 500 × 700 mm bed, the controller and the pass-through doors. The AF2028-80 adds motorized autofocus and stands on a taller frame (930 mm high instead of 680 mm). If you change material thickness often, the $300 difference pays for itself in setup time; for long runs of the same sheet, the MF2028-80 is enough.

Do I need the water chiller package?

The standard package includes a submersible pump and a tank, and OMTech asks for distilled water between 16 and 21 °C. That works for short jobs in a cool room. For daily production or a warm workshop, a chiller keeps the tube in range and protects its life; the chiller package costs $500 more than the standard one.

OMTech 80W CO₂ laser engraver by OMTech

OMTech · CO₂ · $3,000 – $3,500

OMTech's 80W desktop/floor CO₂ machines target sign shops and serious makers who need faster cuts on thick acrylic and wood. More power, larger beds, and higher price than K40 class. Expect setup, ventilation, and maintenance: not plug-and-play.

OMTech Polar 2 70W laser engraver by OMTech

OMTech · CO₂ · $3,700

The Polar 2 70W replaces the original Polar with a much larger 710 × 360 mm bed, a 70W glass CO₂ tube cooled by an internal 4.3 L water loop, a 16 MP full-bed camera, one-touch auto-focus and a rotary in the box. It is the cutting-first, lower-cost half of the Polar 2 line; the 50W RF version engraves faster and finer. No independent long-term review yet.

Monport Reno 65 (2026) laser engraver by Monport

Monport · CO₂ · $1,600 – $2,750

The Reno 65 relaunched in September 2026 with a built-in 3 L water tank, a 600 × 400 mm bed, a 640 × 7 mm front pass-through, 100 mm of Z travel and magnetic assisted focus. One 65W glass tube, three versions: Basic ($1,599.99, 500 mm/s, USB and LightBurn only), Pro ($2,249.99, 800 mm/s, Wi-Fi, offline panel, compatible with the 1W IR module) and Vision (8 MP camera, $2,749.99). In October 2026 the Pro was listed for early-October shipping and the Basic for late November, so both are effectively pre-orders; only the Vision was shown in stock. No independent review of this generation yet.
